Will YouTube TV get the History channel?

For many YouTube TV subscribers, the absence of one channel remains a glaring omission: the History Channel. Packed with documentaries, reality shows, and specials delving into the past, it’s a favourite for history buffs and casual viewers alike. So, the question begs: will YouTube TV ever add the History Channel to its lineup?

Currently, the answer is a murky “no.” The key lies in the ownership puzzle. A&E Networks owns the History Channel and a bouquet of other familiar names like Lifetime and Crime+Investigation. However, A&E and YouTube TV have yet to strike a deal to bring those channels to the platform.

The reasons for this stalemate are complex. Some speculate that A&E demands a hefty price for its entire package, a cost that YouTube TV might be unwilling to absorb. Others suggest disagreements over contractual terms or distribution models. Whatever the case, the outcome is clear: History Channel fans using YouTube TV are left wanting.

But is all hope lost? Not necessarily. While an immediate addition seems unlikely, several factors could shift the tide:

Subscriber pressure:

Increasing demand from YouTube users for the History Channel might incentivize the platform to negotiate harder. Online petitions and social media campaigns could be powerful tools in this regard.

Changing landscape:

The streaming market is constantly evolving, with new players emerging and existing players adjusting strategies. A shift in the competitive landscape could lead to A&E becoming more open to deals with alternative platforms like YouTube TV.

Technology and trends:

With features like cloud DVR and personalized recommendations becoming increasingly important, platforms like YouTube TV might offer unique value propositions to A&E. This could potentially entice the network to partner up.

Of course, the opposite could also happen. A&E might remain exclusive to other streaming services, or YouTube TV might focus on expanding its lineup in other directions. Ultimately, the future remains uncertain.

For now, YouTube TV subscribers yearning for the History Channel have options:

Explore other streaming services: Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, and Philo offer the History Channel. However, each has advantages and disadvantages regarding price, channel selection, and features.

Seek alternative history content:

YouTube boasts a treasure trove of historical documentaries and educational channels. Additionally, free streaming platforms like PBS and YouTube itself offer a wealth of fascinating historical content.

Keep your eyes peeled:

Stay informed about developments in the streaming market and any potential changes in YouTube  channel lineup. Who knows, the History Channel might appear one day.

Whether YouTube conquers the History Channel remains to be seen. But for history enthusiasts, the quest for their favourite shows continues, fueled by hope, speculation, and perhaps a healthy dose of online petitions.
