The website declined in relevance with the rise of other chat platforms such as Discord, but has seen a surge in popularity in 2020, with many TikTok users posting videos from it using the platform. As of Thursday, videos with the Omegle hashtag on TikTok have been viewed 11.4 billion times. Some creators on TikTok and YouTube specialize in “prank” Omegle content.
The announcement of the closure prompted some to recall fond memories of the platform. X users posted their favorite memes created from the chat page, including the infamous burns and embarrassing moments.
However, the viral response to Omegle’s shutdown has largely focused on the platform’s reputation for connecting minors with adults. Matt Bernstein, a progressive political influencer who has more than 400,000 followers on X, wrote: “Shout out omegla, thoughts and prayers to all the 35 year old men I talked to when I was 14.”
